The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD’s new diesel brings a larger engine and more pulling power, along with a substantial reported option price. But the most important comparison for truck shoppers goes beyond choosing the largest torque figure: the truck’s configuration still determines what it can carry and tow.

Kelley Blue Book reported on October 12 that the new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 costs $11,400, citing pricing supplied by a Chevrolet spokesperson. That is an attributed price report, rather than a quote independently supplied to this publication.

Chevrolet’s current U.S. 2027 Silverado HD page confirms the engine and mechanical changes but still says MSRP will be available later in the year. Buyers should confirm the final itemized price for the exact configuration when ordering.

What the reported starting prices include

KBB’s reported Silverado 2500 HD figures include a $2,795 destination charge. They are starting prices, not prices for a diesel-equipped truck with every feature shown in launch photographs. The quoted diesel option should be treated as an additional line item.

Reported 2027 Silverado 2500 HD starting prices, including destination
Trim Starting price
WT $49,995
Custom $53,295
LT $56,695
LTZ $67,695
ZR2 $77,695
High Country $78,195

A useful comparison keeps cab, bed, drivetrain, engine and equipment aligned. Starting prices across trims can represent different builds. Taxes, registration and other applicable charges also need to be separated from the manufacturer’s vehicle and option prices. Do not add the destination fee twice when comparing a quote with a figure that already includes it.

The engines are different choices for different loads

GM’s September 24 announcement confirms 555 horsepower and 1,230 pound-feet of torque for the available 8.3-liter diesel. The enhanced 6.6-liter gasoline V8 is rated at 412 horsepower and 472 pound-feet. Both engines use an Allison 10-speed transmission.

Manufacturer engine ratings for the 2027 Silverado HD
Engine Horsepower Torque
6.6-liter gasoline V8 412 hp 472 lb-ft
8.3-liter Duramax diesel V8 555 hp 1,230 lb-ft

The diesel’s higher torque does not establish that every owner needs it. Its additional purchase cost should be considered alongside the expected trailer, route and use. Neither the specifications nor the reported option price establishes a fuel-cost payback, a maintenance-cost advantage or a resale return.

Why 38,000 pounds is not every truck’s towing rating

GM describes maximum available towing of 38,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer on properly equipped HD models. Its announcement separately lists up to 20,000 pounds for conventional towing. Those are different hitch arrangements and maximum configurations, not interchangeable promises.

Chevrolet also publishes separate maximum payload figures: 6,170 pounds for the diesel and 6,990 pounds for the gasoline engine. Those numbers reinforce why payload and towing need separate checks. They do not describe the carrying allowance of every truck with that engine, and they should not be combined with a maximum trailer figure to invent a single configuration that has every advertised capability.

In its powertrain overview, GM cautions that a particular truck’s trailering capacity can vary and that passengers, cargo, options and accessories can reduce how much it may tow. The loaded trailer and hitch load therefore belong in the calculation with the people and equipment aboard.

Our guide to checking payload and towing capacity on an exact truck explains how the vehicle labels and matching manufacturer documentation fit together. A headline rating helps compare the lineup; the selected truck’s limits govern the job.

Steering and braking change too

The mechanical update also includes rack-and-pinion electric power steering and an electronic brake-boost system. GM describes revised towing calibrations and a new Terrain mode for the HD ZR2, with one-pedal control intended for off-road use. These are manufacturer-described functions, not findings from our own road test.

Chevrolet continues to describe late-2026 availability. That is a model-launch timetable, not confirmation of local stock or a delivery date for an individual order. For shoppers, the useful next step is an exact-build comparison: price, engine, payload, hitch arrangement and the applicable trailer rating together.
