Toyota Recalls Certain 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids: How to Check a VIN
Toyota recall
Updated October 16, 2026
Toyota’s October 7, 2026 notice covers approximately 31,000 U.S. 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids. Check the VIN to determine whether a particular vehicle is included.

What Toyota announced
The Toyota notice describes an electronic-control-unit fault that can shut down the plug-in hybrid system while driving. Loss of motive power at higher speeds can increase crash risk. The announced remedy is an affected-ECU software update at no cost through Toyota dealers.
Toyota said known owners would be notified by early December 2026. That schedule does not confirm a letter or an available appointment for a particular VIN. Follow the current instructions Toyota provides for that vehicle.
Read the VIN result carefully
Use the 17-character VIN with Toyota’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall search. The VIN is normally visible at the lower driver-side windshield and on registration documents. A year/make/model search gives broader information; it does not answer the same question as a vehicle-specific result.
NHTSA says its VIN results identify unrepaired safety recalls. They do not show recalls already repaired, and a newly announced campaign may not yet include every affected VIN. If an early search is clear but you believe the vehicle may be involved, check again and contact Toyota. An empty result needs to be read with those limits.
Keep the notice and the repair paperwork
If an open recall appears, use the manufacturer’s current directions to arrange the remedy and ask about any interim guidance. A recall announcement, a scheduled visit and a completed repair answer different questions. Keep the applicable notice and the final repair paperwork together so a later reader can see which campaign was addressed on which vehicle.
For a used vehicle, our service-history guide explains how to separate a complaint, recommendation and completed operation. Compare the VIN and campaign on a recall repair order with the recall being checked. A general service entry is not a substitute for that campaign-specific record.
