Three New-Car Features Already Found in Earlier Models

A new-model announcement can make familiar features sound newly essential. Before choosing a vehicle for its technology, identify the function you actually want. Smartphone projection, adaptive cruise control and useful electrical outlets already appear in earlier vehicles, but their names leave out important equipment and operating differences.

Three documented examples, rather than a used-car ranking

These examples come from manufacturer owner manuals for the 2021 Honda CR-V, 2021 Toyota RAV4 and 2025 Ford F-150. They illustrate different tasks, rather than establish a winner, a reliability forecast or a current inventory list. Equipment in the particular vehicle still matters.

What the feature name does not tell you
Documented example Useful function Important distinction
2021 CR-V with Display Audio Apple CarPlay and Android Auto The manual describes a wired connection through a specified USB port; rear charging ports do not provide projection.
2021 RAV4 Radar cruise control with low-speed following capability Following-distance assistance is separate from constant-speed cruise and does not replace the driver.
2025 F-150 with an onboard generator Power for compatible electrical equipment Equipment, outlet ratings and operating limits determine capability; an outlet alone does not establish it.

Phone projection: check the connection, not just the screen

The 2021 CR-V manual distinguishes the Display Audio system from the color audio system. For Display Audio, it identifies the 1.5-amp USB port for compatible Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections. Rear console charging ports do not enable either system.

That distinction changes the buying question. A touchscreen and Bluetooth audio do not establish that a car has the desired projection system, or that it operates wirelessly. With the vehicle safely parked, confirm the installed system and how it connects to the phone you intend to use. Honda’s manual also warns that changes in phone technology can affect future functionality; its historical compatibility list is not a promise about every current device. Our CarPlay and Android Auto comparison explains the platform and connection differences.

Adaptive cruise: identify what it controls

The 2021 RAV4 owner manual describes a radar-based mode that adjusts speed to follow a preceding vehicle and can stop with it. A separate mode maintains a set speed. Those are different functions even though both appear within the cruise-control system.

Toyota specifies freeway and highway use and warns that weather, road conditions and detection limits can prevent appropriate operation. The driver remains responsible for observing traffic and taking control. This is not permission to use the system in every low-speed traffic situation. Read the actual mode and limitations before deciding whether the feature suits your driving; do not stage a close-following or collision test to check it.

Truck outlets: the rating is part of the feature

Ford’s 2025 F-150 manual identifies the onboard generator as equipment-dependent. It describes generator mode using the engine to supply the bed outlets up to the rating on their label. Available power and connected-device demand therefore matter more than the presence of a socket in a listing photo.

For the engine-powered 2.4-kW and 7.2-kW systems described here, Ford requires outdoor use and prohibits connecting the vehicle’s outlets to building premises. This feature should not be treated as an interchangeable home-backup system. For a used example, establish the installed system and outlet ratings, then compare them with the equipment you need to power and the manual’s limits.

Choose the function before choosing the newest model

A useful comparison names the task: projecting your phone’s navigation, using a particular cruise mode, or powering specified equipment. Then compare the actual installed equipment and its limitations across vehicles that otherwise meet your needs. A familiar feature label does not establish identical operation, present condition or a reason to pay more for a newer model.
