Tesla Plans to Charge Up to $2,000 to Unlock Additional Range in Model Y Vehicles
Tesla is bringing Model Y owners the option to unlock up to 60 additional miles of range for a fee of $1,500 to $2,000, according to CEO Elon Musk. This hidden capability allows the standard Model Y to match the range of its Long Range counterpart, though it comes at a cost.
The fee to access the additional range, which the vehicle is already technically capable of achieving, is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to manage operational costs amidst financial strains. This practice, while not new for Tesla, has met with mixed reactions from consumers and industry observers alike.
“The “260 mile” range Model Y’s built over the past several months actually have more range that can be unlocked for $1500 to $2000 (gains 40 to 60 miles of range), depending on which battery cells you have. Working through regulatory approvals to enable this,” Musk wrote in a post on social media website X.
This practice of locking and later offering to unlock features already present in a vehicle is not new for Tesla. In past instances, such as during California wildfires, Tesla has unlocked additional range for free to assist owners.
