Lane Departure Warning Not Working: Camera, Glass, Or Settings?
Driver assistance
A lane-departure alert that did not sound can mean several different things: the feature was off, the operating conditions were outside its limits, or the system reported a fault. Identify the exact feature and displayed status before assuming a camera needs replacement or calibration.

Identify the assistance system you are asking about
NHTSA distinguishes lane departure warning from steering assistance. A warning alerts the driver to a detected lane departure. Lane keeping assistance can intervene with steering, while lane centering provides continuing steering assistance. Their names and combinations vary by manufacturer.
Start with the feature’s name in the owner’s manual rather than calling every lane-related function “lane assist.” Record whether you expected an audible alert, a vibration, a visual message or steering assistance. The driver remains responsible for steering and monitoring the road; a working assistance feature is not a substitute for that attention.
Enabled does not mean active in every situation
The 2025 Honda CR-V Road Departure Mitigation instructions provide a useful exact-model example. They describe operating conditions involving speed, road shape, turn-signal use and driver input. They also identify limitations involving lane contrast, weather and camera visibility.
Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation is a named system with its own warning and assistance behavior, not a generic definition of every lane-departure feature. Its conditions should not be transferred to another car. Consult the matching manual to distinguish a feature that is enabled but not currently operating from one reporting a malfunction.
Review settings and menu descriptions while parked. Do not deliberately cross a lane marking, release the wheel or create a near miss to see whether an alert occurs. Record observations from ordinary driving instead of inventing an on-road acceptance test.
Record the message and indicator, not just the missing alert
The same CR-V manual’s indicator descriptions separate selected, operating and warning states. They also describe circumstances such as an obstructed camera area or excessive camera temperature. The applicable display and action depend on the actual vehicle and equipment.
A message about temporary visibility or temperature is a different observation from a persistent fault indication. Follow the corresponding instructions. If the manual allows exterior windshield cleaning, do that safely while parked; do not remove the camera cover, aim the camera by hand or assume every warning needs the same reset.
Keep windshield and repair history specific
If behavior changed after windshield replacement, camera work, a collision repair or another relevant change, retain the invoice and date. Ask the repairer which current manufacturer procedure applies to the installed camera and whether any required aiming or calibration was completed.
Calibration should be tied to that procedure and actual work. A list of possible preceding repairs is not proof that every car needs calibration, or that calibration will fix a particular missed alert. Ask what was verified rather than accepting either a blanket calibration recommendation or a blanket assurance that none is necessary.
Make the complaint easy to understand
| Detail | What helps |
|---|---|
| Exact feature | Its manual name and the alert or assistance you expected. |
| System status | Displayed message, indicator color and whether the feature was selected. |
| Conditions | Lane visibility, weather, lighting and road type during the ordinary trip. |
| Relevant change | Windshield, camera or collision-repair records and when the behavior changed. |
For an unresolved warning, ask whether the original condition was observed and which finding supports the proposed work. A completed calibration record, a repaired fault and a feature that happened to operate once answer different questions. The service documentation should identify which result was actually established.
