Mid-April 2026 Used Prices: Two Different Readings

Used-car wholesale prices moved in opposite directions in Cox Automotive’s mid-April 2026 measures. The adjusted reading fell versus March; the unadjusted reading rose. That distinction matters before treating a market headline as evidence that a particular used car became cheaper.

Unadjusted +0.9% +3.3%

The April 17 report describes an unofficial checkpoint, not an official monthly reading or a prediction of the final month. These figures cover the first half of April, not all of April or today’s retail market.

Why the measures differ

The Manheim methodology describes a wholesale index built from eligible U.S. auction sales across 20 market classes. It removes specified outliers, adjusts prices for mileage and weights the classes using a rolling sales history. A seasonal adjustment is then applied to the mix- and mileage-adjusted total.

Those adjustments help distinguish a change in the measured market from changes in the vehicles selling and the usual seasonal pattern. The unadjusted result answers a different question. Reporting one change without its adjustment label can therefore reverse the apparent direction of the same period’s news. Neither measure is a dollar price for an individual car.

A market index is not a vehicle quote

For an individual estimate, Kelley Blue Book’s value guidance calls for the vehicle’s year, make, model, mileage, style, equipment, condition and ZIP code. It also distinguishes trade-in and private-party values. The intended transaction matters; a broad wholesale percentage cannot replace those inputs or establish a seller’s asking price.

A useful comparison starts with the exact vehicle and the kind of value being discussed. Apply the April report to its stated period and market, then evaluate the individual price separately. The checkpoint alone does not establish a particular discount or trade-in offer.
