2026 Shelby GT500: What Ford Has Actually Announced

Correction and model guide

Ford’s documented supercharged 2026 Mustang is the Dark Horse SC. The current official sources reviewed for this update do not establish a 2026 Shelby GT500. Check the model name, model year and manufacturer specification together when an older story or a vehicle advertisement uses a different designation.

Correction, October 16, 2026: An earlier version of this article presented a reported future GT500 as a confirmed 2026 model. That was too strong. It also speculated about a final gasoline-powered Shelby and future collector demand without evidence sufficient to support those claims. Those statements have been removed. The details below describe Ford’s named, documented models.

What Ford actually announced

Ford’s April 20, 2026 Dark Horse SC announcement opened orders for a Mustang with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, stated output of 795 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, and a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission. Ford described its development alongside the Mustang GTD and GT3. That is an announcement for the Dark Horse SC, not an announcement carrying the Shelby GT500 name.

The release scheduled initial customer deliveries for summer 2026. That was Ford’s published schedule at the time; it does not establish the present location or delivery status of an individual car. An announcement, an accepted order and a vehicle available for inspection are different pieces of evidence.

Dark Horse and Dark Horse SC have different hardware

The similar names make it especially important to use the correct specification sheet. Ford’s 2026 Dark Horse page identifies a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 with 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. The Dark Horse SC page identifies the supercharged 5.2-liter configuration.

A power rating is one specification. It does not establish a particular car’s condition, equipment or performance in a test it has not undergone. Keep the manufacturer’s rating basis and the individual configuration attached to the number.

Read the equipment list beyond the badge

Ford lists a Track Pack separately for the SC. Its product page describes package-specific suspension calibration, carbon-fiber wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes. Those details should not be assigned to every SC merely because a photograph shows the optional package.

For a car being considered, compare its window sticker or other factory equipment documentation with the advertised model and options. If it has later modifications, identify the installed parts and supporting records separately. A badge or an engine-size description is not a complete equipment list.

Keep the confirmed car separate from the prediction

These Ford sources document the Dark Horse SC. They do not establish that a hypothetical GT500 would be the last gasoline-powered Shelby, or that buying a performance Mustang guarantees a rise in value. Similar engine dimensions also do not establish that two differently named cars are the same model.

If a listing advertises a Shelby GT500, establish its actual model year and factory identity before applying any of the 2026 figures above. Then check condition, maintenance, modifications and written terms for that specific vehicle. The useful result is a defined car with matching documents, rather than a purchase decision built around an earlier launch rumor.
