Tesla Model Y Passes New NHTSA Driver-Assist Tests
The 2026 Tesla Model Y has passed a new set of federal driver-assistance tests, giving shoppers another way to evaluate vehicle safety technology. The update matters because crash-avoidance features are now a major part of how many families compare new and used vehicles.
NHTSA said the later-release 2026 Model Y is the first vehicle model to pass its new Advanced Driver Assistance System benchmark under the New Car Assessment Program. The agency said the pass/fail tests were added so consumers can better assess the safety benefits of newer driver-assistance technologies.
The new tests cover pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning and blind spot intervention. NHTSA said Model Y vehicles built on or after November 12, 2025, met the criteria for those newly integrated tests.
Kelley Blue Book reported that the new tests are the first meaningful update to the federal five-star safety program in about a decade. It also noted that NHTSA’s newer process follows the broader safety-testing direction already emphasized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The federal update is especially useful because driver-assistance labels can be hard to compare across brands. A shopper may see similar language on window stickers, but testing helps separate the presence of a feature from how that feature performs under defined scenarios.
