Chevrolet Silverado EV Midgate Adds Flexible Cargo Utility
The Chevrolet Silverado EV’s available Multi-Flex Midgate gives the electric pickup a cargo feature that conventional bed measurements do not fully explain. By opening the wall between the passenger cabin and bed, the system can carry long items while preserving part of the rear seating area. With the available Multi-Flex tailgate arranged for maximum length, Chevrolet says the load floor can extend to 10 feet 10 inches.
The Cars.com hands-on review shows why the 60/40-split Midgate is more than a novelty. One section can remain upright for a rear passenger while the other opens for boards, ladders or recreational equipment. Opening both sections creates the longest path into the cabin. That flexibility can reduce the need for a bed extender or trailer on certain jobs, although every load still needs proper securement.
Chevrolet’s official Silverado EV overview lists the Midgate as an available feature rather than universal equipment. Availability varies by trim and package, so shoppers should verify the exact truck instead of assuming every Silverado EV has it. The window sticker, build sheet and an in-person demonstration are the clearest ways to confirm the hardware and understand how each panel operates.
The feature also changes how shoppers should think about the cabin. Long cargo can extend behind the front seats, which means occupants, loose objects and interior surfaces need protection. On a used truck, buyers should operate both Midgate sections, examine the glass and trim, and check for evidence of water intrusion or loads rubbing against the interior.
Range and capability still depend on configuration. GM’s 2026 Silverado EV lineup announcement says the broader lineup offers up to an estimated 493 miles of range in a specific Max Range configuration. That maximum should not be applied to every Midgate-equipped truck. Measure the items the truck will carry and test the complete loading sequence. Confirm how much rear seating remains, where the cargo will rest and which factory tie-down points can secure it. A maximum length figure does not describe width, height or the effect of an angled item. Shoppers can compare used truck options and review financing resources using the complete out-the-door figure rather than treating the Midgate as a stand-alone cost.
