New IIHS Death-Rate Data Adds Context to Car Shopping

New driver-death-rate data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows substantial differences among recent vehicle models. A Kelley Blue Book summary says the latest analysis uses fatality data from 2021 through 2024 for 2020 through 2023 model-year vehicles and reports an overall average of 37 driver deaths per million registered vehicle years. The figures can inform a vehicle search, but they should not be used as a single-number verdict.

IIHS calculates rates by comparing driver deaths with vehicle registration exposure. Its make-and-model death-rate resource explains that the measure is deaths per million registered vehicle years. That approach is more useful than a raw fatality count because popular vehicles spend more total years on the road, but it cannot remove every difference in how, where and by whom each model is driven.

Driver age, behavior, mileage, road type and typical vehicle use can influence a model’s observed result. A performance car purchased by younger drivers may produce a different real-world pattern than a family crossover even if both perform well in a controlled crash test. That is why the rate describes an observed population outcome, not a guarantee about a particular crash or driver.

Vehicle size also requires context. The new report generally found lower driver death rates among SUVs and higher rates among small cars, but a larger vehicle is not automatically the best choice for every household. IIHS also studies risk to occupants of other vehicles, and very large pickups or SUVs can transfer more force in a collision. Visibility, braking distance, handling and pedestrian protection remain part of the safety picture.

The institute’s broader passenger-vehicle fatality statistics separate single-vehicle and multiple-vehicle crashes and show how vehicle type, age and other factors relate to outcomes. A model-level rate is most useful when paired with current crashworthiness results, crash-avoidance tests, recall status and the exact safety equipment installed on the vehicle being considered.

How to Use Safety Data Before Buying

Start by checking the exact model year and configuration. Safety systems can become standard midway through a generation, and two vehicles with the same name may have different headlights, automatic emergency braking or blind-spot equipment. For a used vehicle, confirm that warning lights illuminate during startup and then turn off normally. Inspect tires, brakes, seat belts, head restraints and child-seat anchors. Check the VIN for open recalls and request service records. A clean specification sheet cannot compensate for neglected tires, unresolved damage or disabled safety equipment.

Shoppers can use the used-vehicle search to build a comparison list, then research each model year separately. A practical shortlist should balance crash protection, avoidance technology, outward visibility, vehicle size, driving confidence and budget. Test driving on familiar roads can reveal whether mirrors, controls and seating position work well for the intended driver.

Ownership costs matter because safety depends on maintenance. A vehicle with affordable tire and brake replacement may be easier to keep in proper condition than one that strains the household budget. The service and ownership resources can help frame those questions, while financing resources help keep the payment and total cost in view together.

Owners replacing an older vehicle can also request a trade-in estimate before comparing newer safety features. The new IIHS data is valuable because it captures real-world outcomes, but the best decision combines those outcomes with crash tests, installed equipment, condition and responsible driving rather than relying on a dramatic ranking alone.
