EV Fast Charging Growth Gives Shoppers More Context

U.S. EV fast-charging infrastructure continued expanding in the first quarter of 2026, according to a new report from charging data firm Paren. The growth matters because charging access, station reliability and road-trip convenience remain central questions for shoppers comparing electric vehicles with hybrids and gas-powered vehicles.

Paren said its Q1 2026 report examined infrastructure expansion, utilization, reliability, pricing and the shift toward higher-capacity charging networks. The company described a market that is still adding public fast-charging capacity even as EV sales growth has become more selective.

EVinfo, citing Paren’s data, reported that more than 3,000 new DC fast-charging plugs were added nationwide during the first quarter. Electrek reported that Paren’s data showed about 3,300 new fast-charging ports and utilization near 15.6%, with reliability improving in many states.

For shoppers, the numbers provide useful context but not a complete answer. More chargers can reduce range anxiety, especially for road trips, but the experience still depends on route, vehicle charging speed, plug type, station uptime, payment systems and whether the driver can charge at home.

That is why EV shopping should start with a driving pattern. A driver who commutes 35 miles a day and can charge overnight has a different ownership profile than a driver who makes frequent highway trips, parks outside without home charging or needs to tow.
