Best Used SUVs for Families in Louisville and Southern Indiana 2025
Finding the right family SUV means balancing a lot of competing priorities: enough seats for everyone, cargo space for gear, safety ratings you can trust, fuel economy that doesn’t break the bank, and a price that makes financial sense. In Louisville KY and Southern Indiana, we see families make this decision every week at Craig & Landreth — here’s what we’ve learned.
What Makes a Great Family SUV?
Before diving into specific models, let’s establish what actually matters for families:
Third-row seating: If you have three or more kids, or regularly transport extended family, a genuine third row is a must. Not all “three-row” SUVs are equal — some have barely usable rear rows while others (Kia Telluride, Chevrolet Traverse) have legitimately comfortable third-row seats for adults.
Safety ratings: IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA ratings matter. Look for IIHS “Top Safety Pick+” designation and 5-star NHTSA overall ratings. Good used family SUVs from the past 5 years generally do well here.
Cargo space: Behind the third row (or behind the second row with seats folded) — you’ll need room for strollers, sports equipment, luggage, and the mountain of gear families accumulate.
Reliability and running costs: With kids in the car, a breakdown isn’t just inconvenient — it can be a safety issue. Choose vehicles with strong reliability records. Asian brands (Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Mazda) generally lead here; American brands have closed the gap considerably in recent years.
Best 3-Row Family SUVs Under $35,000
Chevrolet Traverse — The Traverse is arguably the best three-row value in this price range. It offers genuine three-row comfort, strong safety ratings, and a reliable 3.6L V6. In the $22,000-$32,000 range, you’ll find 2018-2021 models with reasonable miles. The 2018 redesign was significant — prioritize that generation or newer. Cargo capacity is class-leading at over 98 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Kia Telluride — The Telluride won almost every automotive award when it launched in 2020 and continues to dominate its segment. Genuinely comfortable three-row seating, premium materials, and excellent safety ratings. The challenge: they hold value so well that used prices are still high. Under $35,000 typically gets you a 2020-2021 model. Worth the premium if you can find a deal.
Hyundai Palisade — The Telluride’s twin (same platform, shared development). Slightly different styling and feature set, often trades at a small discount to the Telluride. Both are excellent — pick the one you prefer aesthetically.
GMC Acadia — The Acadia is a step smaller than the Traverse but has the advantage of being more maneuverable in city traffic. Good safety scores, reliable 2.5L turbo-4 or optional V6. Best for families who need three rows but don’t need maximum cargo capacity.
Ford Explorer — The 2020+ Explorer returned to rear-wheel-drive-based architecture (a major improvement in driving dynamics). Strong safety scores, good third-row access, and powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder standard with optional V6. Avoid 2011-2019 models which had documented engine and transmission issues; the 2020+ is a different (and much better) vehicle.
Best 2-Row Family SUVs Under $35,000
If you have two kids and don’t need a third row, a midsize crossover gives you more of what you actually use — better fuel economy, easier parking, and lower price with equivalent features:
Toyota RAV4 — The default recommendation for good reason. Bulletproof reliability, excellent safety ratings, and strong resale value. The 2019+ RAV4 is a significant improvement over older generations. RAV4 Hybrid adds fuel economy without hybrid complexity concerns. Under $30,000 gets you a solid 2017-2020 example.
Honda CR-V — Slightly more interior space than the RAV4, excellent fuel economy, comfortable ride. The 2017+ generation addressed oil dilution issues from the previous 1.5T engine. Strong safety ratings across the board. Comparable pricing to RAV4 in the used market.
Mazda CX-5 — If you want the most “premium feeling” crossover under $30,000, the CX-5 delivers. Interior quality rivals vehicles costing $10,000 more, driving dynamics are genuinely fun, and reliability is top-tier. Slightly smaller cargo area than RAV4/CR-V, but outstanding value overall.
Subaru Outback — The Outback is essentially a raised wagon with standard AWD, and it’s an ideal choice for families who want all-weather capability without the bulk of an SUV. Excellent cargo space, strong safety ratings (Subaru EyeSight is genuinely good), and a devoted, reliable ownership base.
Hyundai Tucson — The 2022+ Tucson redesign was a major leap forward in styling, technology, and efficiency. Available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid for maximum fuel savings. Strong warranty (10-year/100,000-mile powertrain when bought from original owner). Good value compared to Japanese competition.
What Budget Should You Set?
Here’s honest guidance on the used family SUV market in 2025:
- $18,000-$22,000: 2016-2018 RAV4, CR-V, Traverse with 60,000-90,000 miles. Reliable transportation but you’re beyond the prime depreciation curve.
- $22,000-$28,000: The sweet spot for value. 2019-2021 versions of most models with 40,000-70,000 miles. Best mix of modern features and remaining useful life.
- $28,000-$35,000: 2020-2022 premium trims, Telluride, Palisade, or lower-mileage examples. If budget allows, this range gets you the most feature content.
Factor in: Indiana sales tax (7%), registration, insurance (get a quote before buying), and a maintenance fund of $75-$100/month.
