AAA Study Shows Weather Can Change EV And Hybrid Costs
AAA’s latest EV and hybrid efficiency study shows that weather can meaningfully change range, fuel economy and operating costs. The findings matter because shoppers comparing hybrids and EVs need realistic expectations beyond ideal EPA numbers.
AAA said its automotive engineering team tested three EVs and three hybrids at 20 degrees, 75 degrees and 95 degrees, with cabin climate control set to 72 degrees. The group used a chassis dynamometer, which lets researchers compare vehicles under controlled test conditions.
At 95 degrees, AAA found hybrids had a 12.0% decrease in fuel efficiency compared with moderate temperature testing. EVs showed a 10.4% drop in efficiency and an 8.5% loss of driving range in the same heat comparison.
Cold weather had a larger effect. AAA reported that at 20 degrees, hybrids lost 22.8% in fuel economy, while EVs showed a 35.6% drop in MPGe and a 39.0% decrease in calculated driving range compared with 75-degree testing.
The cost results also varied by charging behavior. AAA said cold operation increased hybrid fuel cost by $28.44 per 1,000 miles, while EV costs rose $32.11 per 1,000 miles with home charging and $76.93 per 1,000 miles with public charging.
AAA’s survey work also found stronger stated interest in hybrids than fully electric vehicles. The organization said 35% of U.S. adults reported being very likely or likely to buy a hybrid next, while EV hesitation still often centers on charging access and range confidence.
The study does not mean one powertrain is right for every driver. It means climate, route length, parking, charging access and energy prices should be part of the decision. A commuter with home charging may view an EV differently than a driver who depends heavily on public fast charging. Daily mileage and parking location should be part of that math.
For used EV and hybrid shoppers, this is especially useful. A vehicle’s published fuel economy or range estimate should be balanced with real-world use, seasonal weather, tire condition, battery age, commute length and service history.
Trade-in customers should also understand how efficiency expectations shape demand. Owners deciding whether to trade their vehicle may see stronger shopper interest in hybrids or EVs when fuel costs, charging access and weather performance are top of mind.
Financing should include total ownership cost, not just monthly payment. A shopper comparing an EV, hybrid or gas SUV should review purchase price, fuel or electricity cost, insurance, charger needs and loan terms through a financing comparison.
Maintenance remains part of the picture. Tires, alignment, battery health, brake service, cooling systems and software updates can all affect efficiency, so a service and ownership-cost review is useful before buying.
What EV And Hybrid Shoppers Should Watch
Shoppers should compare EPA ratings with likely real-world conditions: winter driving, summer heat, highway speeds, home charging availability, public charging prices and daily mileage. Extreme weather can change both convenience and cost.
