AAA EV And Hybrid Test Shows Weather Cost Impact

AAA released a new efficiency study comparing battery-electric and hybrid vehicles in hot, mild and cold test conditions. The results matter because range, fuel economy and energy cost can change with weather, which affects how shoppers compare EVs, hybrids and gas vehicles.

AAA tested a group of battery-electric vehicles and hybrids on a dynamometer at 20 degrees, 75 degrees and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The report included models such as the Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Honda CR-V Hybrid, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Toyota Prius.

The study found that cold weather created the largest cost and efficiency penalty for several vehicles in the test set. AAA said the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Ford Mustang Mach-E saw higher estimated 1,000-mile electricity costs at 20 degrees than at the 75-degree baseline, while hybrid models also showed fuel-economy losses in colder operation.

The report also shows why shoppers should avoid oversimplified EV-versus-hybrid comparisons. A battery-electric vehicle can have a low cost per mile when charged at residential rates, but public fast-charging prices, temperature, highway use and cabin heating can change the math. A hybrid can be easier to fuel on long trips, but it still uses more fuel when weather and driving conditions reduce efficiency.

For used-vehicle shoppers, the takeaway is to compare real use cases instead of sticker numbers alone. A buyer with home charging, predictable commuting and mostly mild-weather use may view an EV differently from a buyer who parks outside, drives long highway routes or relies mainly on public charging.

AAA’s fuel-price page listed the national regular gasoline average at $4.457 on May 4, 2026. That makes efficiency more visible in household budgets, but fuel price is still only one part of ownership cost. Insurance, tires, maintenance, finance terms and resale value can change the total cost picture.

Service history still matters for every powertrain. EVs do not need oil changes, but tires, brakes, cabin filters, coolant systems, recalls and software updates still require attention. Hybrids and gas vehicles also need regular maintenance, and shoppers should review service and ownership costs before assuming one vehicle type is automatically cheaper.

Trade-in customers should keep fuel economy and maintenance records organized. Clean service records, completed recalls and documented tire condition can help appraisers understand a vehicle’s condition, especially for hybrids and EVs where shoppers may ask more detailed ownership questions. Owners considering whether to trade their vehicle should look at current market conditions, not just fuel prices.

Financing also affects the comparison. A vehicle with lower energy cost may still be the wrong fit if the price, rate and term stretch the monthly budget too far. Shoppers comparing EVs, hybrids and gas models should review auto financing alongside estimated fuel or charging costs.

What This Means For Car Shoppers

The practical takeaway is to match the powertrain to the household. Home charging, commute length, winter driving, highway use, garage access and expected ownership length all matter.

AAA’s study does not make one technology the universal winner. It gives shoppers a better checklist: compare rated economy, realistic energy cost, charging or fueling access, warranty coverage, maintenance and resale outlook.
