2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA Adds Hybrid and Electric Choices

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a redesigned GLA with both battery-electric and 48-volt hybrid powertrains. A Kelley Blue Book report identifies the U.S. vehicle as a 2028 model expected in the second half of 2027, with pricing to be announced later. The broad powertrain choice matters because shoppers will be able to compare familiar gasoline convenience with an electric version built around newer charging hardware.

The official Mercedes-Benz announcement describes a lower body, a wheelbase stretched by 61 millimeters and more passenger room. The electric model adds a 107-liter front storage compartment, while the rear seat uses a 40/20/40 split. U.S. specifications can differ from the European launch information, so final cargo measurements, trims and equipment should be confirmed when the American order guide appears.

For the U.S. market, KBB reports GLA 250+ rear-wheel-drive and GLA 350 4Matic all-wheel-drive electric variants. Both use an 85-kWh usable battery. Mercedes lists an 800-volt architecture and up to 320-kW DC fast charging for the new electric GLA, plus an optional converter for 400-volt chargers. Actual charging speed will depend on the station, battery temperature, starting charge and vehicle settings.

Mercedes publishes European WLTP range figures, but an EPA range estimate for the U.S. model has not been announced. Shoppers should avoid converting the overseas number into a promised American result. The hybrid version uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an integrated electric motor and a 1.3-kWh 48-volt battery. KBB reports front-wheel-drive GLA 220 and all-wheel-drive GLA 250 versions for the U.S. The system can support low-speed electric movement under limited conditions, but it is not a plug-in hybrid and does not offer the extended electric-only travel of a battery EV.

What GLA Shoppers Should Compare

Begin with charging access. The Department of Energy EV overview explains the differences among home and public charging. A household that can install reliable overnight charging may find the electric model convenient. A driver without dependable charging may prefer the hybrid, even if the electric version’s estimated range appears sufficient on paper.

Next, compare total cost. Final U.S. pricing, destination charges, insurance, home-charger work and electricity or fuel costs all matter. Fast-charging capability is useful on trips, but most owners should also estimate ordinary weekly charging. The financing resources can help organize payment, down-payment and term questions once prices are available.

Drivers considering a previous-generation GLA should not assume the new model makes an older one unsuitable. Earlier vehicles may offer a lower purchase price and a familiar service history. Search the used-vehicle selection, compare exact model years and verify equipment by VIN because driver-assistance and convenience packages can vary.

Cargo space and seating comfort deserve an in-person check. A longer wheelbase may improve legroom, but roof shape, seat design and child-seat fit can matter more than a single dimension. Owners preparing to change vehicles can obtain a trade-in estimate without assuming a future GLA is already available or priced.

The reveal establishes the important framework: electric and hybrid choices, faster charging hardware and more interior room.
