Mercedes-AMG GT53 EV Adds a More Attainable Entry Model

Mercedes-AMG is expanding its new electric four-door performance lineup with a GT53 model rated at 536 horsepower and 590 pounds-feet of torque. According to the August 6 Car and Driver report, the dual-motor GT53 is positioned below the more powerful GT55 and GT63 variants. The addition gives shoppers a less extreme entry point, although Mercedes has not yet announced a U.S. price or an EPA range figure.

The GT53 uses one electric motor at each axle for all-wheel drive. Car and Driver reports a manufacturer-claimed zero-to-60-mph time in the mid-three-second range and a 106-kWh usable battery capacity. Those figures are substantial, but they remain product-announcement specifications until independent testing and U.S. certification data are available.

Mercedes developed the electric GT 4-Door on its AMG.EA performance platform. The official Mercedes-AMG model page describes an 800-volt architecture and highlights axial-flux motors in the higher-output versions. The GT53’s simpler dual-motor layout distinguishes it from the three-motor GT55 and GT63, which are designed for much higher peak output.

Charging capability is one of the most notable claims. Car and Driver reports that Mercedes expects the GT53 to add roughly 280 miles of range in 10 minutes at a sufficiently powerful DC fast charger. That number appears tied to non-EPA range methodology and ideal charging conditions, so U.S. shoppers should wait for final charge-curve, connector and certified-range details before making direct comparisons.

The company is investing in production for the underlying motor technology. A Mercedes-Benz manufacturing announcement says series production of its axial-flux electric motors began in Berlin in June. That primary-source detail supports the broader platform story, but it does not mean every GT variant uses the same motor count or output. Configuration-specific specifications still matter.

What Electric Performance Shoppers Should Watch

The first missing number is U.S. price. A lower-output model may cost less than the GT55 and GT63, but “more attainable” is relative within a premium performance lineup. Buyers should compare base price, standard equipment, wheel and tire choices, insurance and charging hardware once the U.S. order guide is released. Large performance tires can also create meaningful replacement costs.

The second missing number is EPA range. European or manufacturer estimates use different procedures and should not be treated as EPA labels. High speeds, cold weather and repeated acceleration can be especially relevant for a performance EV.

Charging speed should be evaluated as a curve, not just a peak. A high maximum rate only helps when the station can supply it and the battery is within the right temperature and state-of-charge window. Home charging will likely handle routine use for many owners, while road-trip convenience depends on compatible stations along the actual route.

Shoppers comparing current used luxury and performance vehicles should consider depreciation, warranty coverage and charging access alongside acceleration. Owners planning a change can establish equity with a trade-in estimate, compare terms through the financing resources and account for tires and routine care through the service and ownership resources. The GT53 is now confirmed, but price and U.S. range remain the key facts to watch.
