Remote Start Not Working: Common Conditions And Warnings
Connected vehicle features
Remote start depends on both a request reaching the vehicle and the vehicle allowing that request. A phone app that cannot connect, a key fob outside its working range and a hood-open warning are different problems. Separating communication from operating conditions is more useful than repeating the start command or assuming the starter motor has failed.

Identify which remote system you are using
A factory key fob, a manufacturer app and an aftermarket remote-start installation can have different requirements. Start with the instructions for the system actually fitted. A button sequence found for another trim, model year or accessory is not evidence that your vehicle should respond the same way.
For an app-based example, Ford requires an activated embedded modem, a vehicle added to the correct account and cellular connectivity for both the phone and vehicle. Its remote features are not standard on every Ford. A phone showing a good signal cannot establish that the parked car also has a working connection.
That creates a useful distinction after buying a used vehicle or changing accounts: remote features may need correct setup even when normal starting works perfectly. Confirm the supported feature and account connection before treating an app error as a mechanical starting problem. Follow the manufacturer’s transfer and activation process, rather than sharing the previous owner’s credentials.
Why a valid request can still be refused
Ford’s Mustang remote-start limitations give concrete examples: the alarm sounding, hood open, transmission outside Park, ignition already on or battery voltage below the required minimum. The manual also says not to use remote start with a low fuel level. It does not describe that last warning as the same thing as an automatic low-fuel lockout.
These are manufacturer examples, rather than a universal list for all makes. They show why a refusal can be intentional. A hood switch that reports open, for example, belongs to the authorization conditions even if the engine starts normally from inside the car. Do not bypass an interlock to make the remote feature operate.
| What you observe | Where the distinction leads |
|---|---|
| App cannot send a command | Account, supported equipment, modem activation and connectivity. |
| Vehicle reports remote start unavailable | Read the stated condition and the applicable manual’s limitations. |
| Remote start fails, but normal starting works | Separate remote authorization from the engine’s ability to start. |
| The engine also will not start normally | Investigate the starting complaint itself, rather than only the app. |
Use the message, rather than clearing it
Ford’s app support also identifies Deep Sleep mode, remote-start settings and a check-engine light as reasons to investigate. Its instructions require resolving the cause of a check-engine light before the app’s remote-start feature can be used. Erasing a warning is not the same as correcting its cause, and a universal battery-disconnection or reset routine may simply remove useful information.
Use the exact wording shown in the vehicle or app to find the relevant manufacturer instructions. A connectivity message and an engine warning direct you to different information. If an aftermarket system is installed, its installer documentation matters too; factory-app instructions may not describe its wiring or safeguards.
Engine exhaust still matters when nobody is in the car
The CDC warns against running a vehicle in an attached garage, even with the garage door open. Remote operation does not change that carbon-monoxide risk. Use a combustion-engine remote-start feature only where the vehicle’s exhaust precautions can be met.
On a battery-electric vehicle, a similarly placed app control may operate cabin preconditioning rather than start a combustion engine. Ford identifies preconditioning separately among its EV functions. Check the actual feature name and status; silence alone does not establish that an electric vehicle ignored a cabin-climate request.
