Engine Misfire: Symptoms, Codes and Flashing Warnings

Engine warnings

Updated October 16, 2026

A misfire is a missed burn in an engine cylinder. If the engine feels rough or hesitant, the useful distinction is between the symptom, the recorded event and its cause.

What the symptom and code can tell you

Ford’s archived 1999 technical reference defines a misfire as absent cylinder combustion, with spark, fuel metering and compression among the possible causes. The term describes the combustion event; it does not mean that a spark plug has been proved faulty.

P0300 describes random or multiple misfire; P0301–P0308 identify cylinder-specific events in Volkswagen’s diagnostic aid for 2008–2022 gasoline models except Routan. That bulletin warns against replacing multiple components for one misfiring cylinder, or treating P0300 alone as a reason to replace all plugs, coils or injectors.

Preserve when the roughness occurred: at a cold start, after warming up or intermittently. If it has stopped, say so. Those observations belong alongside the saved operating data and workshop findings.

A flashing warning changes the immediate response

The 2024 Ford Super Duty manual says a flashing malfunction indicator could indicate misfire and damaging exhaust temperatures. Ford calls for immediate service; do not deliberately reproduce the event to obtain a better description.

For its blinking misfire warning while driving, the 2021 gasoline Honda CR-V manual directs a safe stop away from flammable material and engine shutdown for cooling. It separately describes five pre-start blinks when readiness codes are unset. The operating context matters; these patterns are not interchangeable.

When the complaint is mainly vibration

If shaking at idle is the main concern, the rough-idle and cabin-vibration explanation separates felt vibration from a recorded combustion fault. Keep that description with the exact warning and any recorded code.
