What to know before buying a used Ford

Models we see most

  • F-150: Full-size pickup with an aluminum body since 2015 and a range of V6, EcoBoost and V8 engines.
  • Explorer: Three-row SUV; the 2020 redesign moved it to a rear-drive-based platform.
  • Escape: Compact SUV with gas and hybrid versions.

What to check on the test drive

  • Listen for a rattle at cold start on EcoBoost engines, which can point to timing-chain wear.
  • Check that the 10-speed automatic (2017-and-newer trucks) shifts smoothly without harsh downshifts.
  • Engage 4×4 if equipped and confirm it shifts in and out cleanly.
  • Look underneath for frame, brake-line and rocker rust on older trucks.
